In an enchanting series of sketches called Couture Disney Princesses, Chicago-based fashion designer and self-described “bowtie extraordinaire” Michael Anthony has given dazzling modern makeovers to everybody’s favorite heroines. Each of Anthony’s gorgeous fashion illustrations highlights the iconic style of each beloved character while entirely reimagining her classic look as a runway-ready ensemble.
With rich tones, sparkling accents, bold patterns, and beautiful textures, the couture designs add a contemporary twist to the characters’ classic costumes. As Anthony dreams up the reimagined gowns, he skillfully retains the basic aesthetic of the original designs by using the same distinguishable color palettes, sticking to similar silhouettes, and choosing accessories inspired by each princess’ fairytale. Snow White’s blue, yellow, and red tea-length dress, for example, is adorned with an apple-themed belt and topped with a big red bow; Pocahontas’ tan and turquoise frock is covered with an asymmetrical fur pelt; and Ariel’s mermaid-style, glistening gown goes perfectly with her metallic nautilus shell handbag.
Anthony shares these stunning Disney-themed designs on his Instagram, where he also posts amazing fashion illustrations inspired by well-known characters from feature films, classic cartoons, and childhood television shows—even Barney gets the couture treatment!
