Elegant Floral Tattoos Mimic Delicate Pencil Sketches

Delicate and detailed, the tiny floral tattoos of Toronto-based artist Lindsay Asselstine are whimsical works of art. Asselstine—who goes by Lindsay April on social media—is known for her simple, sketch-like style and nature-inspired pieces, ranging from miniature portraits of pets and animals to dainty depictions of flowers and foliage.

As an artist at Toronto’s Golden Iron Tattoo Studio, April is often commissioned for her expertly executed flora-and-fauna creations. Each piece is typically small in size and minimalist in style. Some pieces, like her understated floral tattoos, are the result of expertly applied fine lines. Others—namely, her furry and feathery friends—feature subtle shading inspired by pointillism. Whether an outline or a bit more tonal, however, each exquisite, illustrative piece is rendered in a soft greyscale reminiscent of graphite.

With such a distinctive, refined style, it’s hard to believe that Asselstine has only been working as a tattoo artist for a year. What is not hard to believe, however, is that her background is in traditional studio art. “I’ve always enjoyed art but I never imagined I would be tattooing,” Asselstine admits. “To be honest, I think it started as a joke between friends who appreciated my artwork that I’d post on social media. I remember it just seemed so impossible and intimidating at the time. Once I finally mustered up the courage to find an apprenticeship, I completely fell in love with the art of tattooing.”

You can keep up with Asselstine’s budding career through her regularly updated Instagram.
