Once upon a time, San Francisco-based designer Rachel Sigmon worked as a licensed cosmetologist and professional makeup artist. After realizing that she would “rather be a starving artist than a slave to [her] shears,” however, the mother-of-three decided to follow her passion and move in a slightly different direction: headdress design. Now, through her exquisite Etsy shop, Sigmon sells a selection of her enchanting creations, which includes both her distinctive hats and hair accessories and other works of wearable art.
Inspired by fantasy and fairytales, the creative costumes evoke Sigmon’s admiration for art and enduring appreciation for make-believe. Her headdresses range from glittery crowns and delicate tiaras to nature-inspired horns and antlers. Whether elaborate and ornate or more rustic in design, all of these head-turning hats have one thing in common: they look like they’re straight out of a storybook!
In addition to her impressive and imaginative headdresses, Sigmon also creates full-blown costumes, which she shares on her Instagram. Each photo posted by Sigmon is a work of art in and of itself, as she enlists the help of talented photographers (namely, Tara Van Rooyen) and employs her own makeup skills to enhance the dreamy spirit of her wearable art. While she undoubtedly enjoys applying the glistening, glittering makeup to her subjects, Sigmon remains happy with her professional shift, as she explains in an Instagram post: “I seriously love what I do and couldn’t imagine doing anything else as a career and personal hobby.”
