The United States is gearing up for the 2020 Presidential election where the country could see a woman as the Democratic party candidate. While that is certainly a big deal, the country of Finland is steps ahead and recently introduced the world’s youngest serving Prime Minister named Sanna Marin. At age 34, she is just one of five women who are in high-ranking leadership positions in the Finnish government. The five political parties are all led by women and four of them are under 35 years old.
Marin was formerly the transport minister before taking on the role of Prime Minister. She took over the position from Antti Rinne, a former trade unionist who was forced to resign after six months in office. Her inauguration makes her the third female prime minister in the country’s history, and her story of triumph is one in which she overcame adversity. Raised by a single mother, Marin was the first of her family to go to college. After completing her schooling, she rapidly rose in politics. By age 27, she was the head of the city council for Tampere—Finland’s third-largest city.
“I have not actually ever thought about my age or my gender,” Marin remarked after her vote into office was announced. “I think of the reasons I got into politics and those things for which we have won the trust of the electorate.”
Other Finnish political players recognize the importance of women leading their nation’s government and how their representation matters for the future. “My party is not in government, but I rejoice that the leaders of the five parties in government are female,” former Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb tweeted. “Shows that Finland is a modern and progressive country. The majority of my government was also female. One day gender will not matter in government. Meanwhile pioneers.”
