Avengers Ukiyo-e Illustrations by Takumi

Japanese illustrator Takumi blends popular culture with the ancient Ukiyo-e art form in his latest series of superhero illustrations. To celebrate the recent Avengers: Endgame film release, the talented fantasy fan rendered each famous character in the style of authentic Japanese woodblock illustrations.

Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and the rest of the cast have been thoughtfully reimagined as if they’re fierce Japanese warriors. Each character is drawn wearing Takumi’s take on their superhero costumes, complete with traditional Japanese patterns and symbolic motifs. Captain America’s hakama-style pants feature the Buddhist Shippo pattern, referencing his distinct shield. Iron Man is illustrated in clothing featuring the complex Bishamon Kikko pattern, mimicking a circuit board, and Hulk appears as a Japanese sumo wrestler.

You can check out more from Takumi’s ever-growing portfolio on Instagram, where he’s recently posted Ukiyo-e versions of the Deadpool characters, Batman, and Harley Quinn.
