Drones are all the rage, but some of the best equipment is too bulky and cumbersome for your average person. Luckily, DJI—a leader of drone technology—is solving that problem by releasing a foldable drone that can fit in the palm of your hand. The pocket-sized DJI Mavic Mini has been rumored for months and now the ultra-light, compact model has arrived. As the newest edition to the Mavic series, this tiny drone packs all the technology that professionals have come to expect inside an exceptionally small frame.

“To design a drone as lightweight, compact yet capable as Mavic Mini was one of the most challenging projects we’ve ever tackled at DJI,” said Roger Luo, President, DJI. “Distilling top-of-the-line features into a palm-of-your-hand drone is the culmination of years of work, and we are ecstatic to bring a new class of drone to the DJI lineup.”

Every aspect of the Mavic Mini has been carefully thought through, starting with its weight. At just 249 grams, it falls into a safe category in many countries where drones require licenses or have been prohibited. It also benefits from Mavic’s safety technology, which helps users avoid restricted areas, as well as built-in altitude limits and a return to launch point trigger if the battery gets critically low.

While the Mavic Mini carries the DJI name that professionals love, it has also been purposely developed to embrace novice users. Simple to operate and fly, travelers will love bringing the drone along to capture their adventures. Using the new DJI Fly app, pilots of all skill levels will easily be able to get the footage they’re after. There are special built-in modes for cinema and sport to give the look and feel of any scene that users would want to capture. And everything can easily be viewed on the ground thanks to an HD live feed.

There are also some incredible aerial moves called QuickShots that a simple push of a button will enable. Seriously upping your drone game, they’ll ensure your work looks professional even if you are a beginner. These fancy maneuvers include:

  • Rocket – Mavic Mini flies straight up into the air with the camera pointing downward following your subject. You can set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
  • Circle – Mavic Mini will circle around your subject at a constant altitude and distance.
  • Dronie – Mavic Mini flies backward and upward, with the camera tracking your subject. You can set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
  • Helix – Mavic Mini flies upward and away, spiraling around your subject. You can set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.

So what are the technical specs? The DJI Mavic Mini can capture 2.7K video at 30fps, 1080p at 60 frames per second, or 12-megapixel photographs using the 1/2.3-inch sensor. Its three-axis motorized gimbal makes for smooth, stable footage that can easily be shared with friends, family, and members of the SkyPixel community—the social media platform for drone lovers.

The DJI Mavic Mini is now available for pre-sale. The standard package, which retails for $399, includes the Mavic Mini, remote controller, one battery, and extra propellers. The Fly More Combo package, which retails for $499, includes everything from the standard package plus a 360° Propeller Cage, Two-Way charging Hub, three batteries in total, three sets of extra propellers, and a carrying case.
