Filmmakers looking to shoot high-quality video without paying the high price of professional equipment will be intrigued by an announcement by Panasonic. This leader in electronics is expanding its line of Lumix full-frame mirrorless cameras by focusing on a model rich with video features. The Panasonic Lumix S1H will be, according to the brand, the world’s first single lens mirrorless camera to have 6K shooting capabilities.

Though the Lumix S1H won’t hit the market until Fall 2019, Panasonic has released a few details about the features we can expect. Designed specifically for film production, the S1H combines the quality of a professional camera with the portability of a mirrorless camera. The full-frame mirrorless camera can take 6K/24p (3:2 aspect ratio) and 5.9K/30p (16:9 aspect ratio) footage or adapt to a 4:3 Anamorphic mode in order to remain flexible in any professional situation. And, for the first time, an interchangeable digital full-frame camera can accommodate 10-bit 60p 4K/C4K recording.

The Lumix S1H competes with Panasonic’s top professional video cameras thanks to the inclusion V-Log/V-Gamut with a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops, which is nearly identical to those of the Panasonic CinemaVariCam. Panasonic states that this “allow[s] it to precisely capture everything from dark to bright areas. So much so, that the color and even the texture of human skin are faithfully reproduced. Designed under consistent color management, the S1H’s recorded footage is compatible with V-Log footage recorded by VariCam or the LUMIX GH5/GH5S.”

This is a huge coup, considering that the Panasonic CinemaVariCam has a price tag of $16,500 and the Lumix S1H has a rumored retail price of around $4,000. The model will also have unlimited video recording as long as the camera stays at the proper operating temperature.

If you can’t wait until the Fall or are more focused on still photography, you can check out the other models in the Panasonic Lumix S line. The Lumix S1R was developed for still photography, while the Lumix S1 is a hybrid model for high-quality stills and video.

Panasonic has announced its new full-frame mirrorless camera, which can shoot 6K video.
