Seniors Recreation Album Covers

Senior care facilities around the world have been under lockdowns since COVID-19 became a pandemic. Keeping spirits high during this time can be a challenge, which means that the activity coordinators for these places have to get creative with what they plan for their communities.

While the residents at the Amenida Seniors Community recreated famous artworks for the Getty Museum Challenge, those at the Sydmar Lodge Care Home in Edgware, England decided to go a musical route. Activities coordinator Robert Speker planned a photoshoot of the residents that had them recreating famous album covers of anyone from Elvis Presley to Taylor Swift.

Using a combination of in-camera photography and Photoshop, the classic covers capture the essence of their iconic source material. Residents pose in the midst of moody lighting, don the same tattoos, and (in the case of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane album) even have their faces painted. After four months of lockdown, it must’ve been fun to pretend to be someone else—even if for only a little while.

Although the albums are meant to be as close to the originals as possible, Speker injected some personal touches into the cover recreations. For Adele’s album, which has the words “Adele 21” on it, he replaced it with “Vera 93” to highlight the resident (and her age) in the picture. And for Taylor Swift’s 1989 album, it is reimagined as 1922, seemingly to reflect the year in which the senior model was born.
