South Korea Honors Health Workers With Dazzling Drone Light Show

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a trying time for people all over the world, which is why the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport decided to treat the residents of Seoul to a surprise drone light show. On July 4th, 300 drones lit up the night sky above the Han River in a spectacular synchronized light show that displayed safety reminders and tribute to health workers.

To avoid having large crowds gather to watch the show, Seoul didn’t advertise it ahead of time. Instead, the dazzling display came as a total surprise to the city’s residents. All 300 drones were cleverly programmed to fly with precise movements, resulting in a digital “flash mob” performance that lasted around 10 minutes.

In a bid to thank frontline workers and to encourage citizens to keep battling against the spread of COVID-19, the drones were used to create images of medical workers in protective gear, demonstrations of hand washing, people wearing masks, and people socially distancing from one another. One of the final designs was simply a “Thanks to you” message with a love heart.
