Oreo Built a Doomsday Vault in Norway for Cookies to Preserve Them for Generations to Come

Asteroid 2018 VP1 is scheduled to graze Earth on Nov. 2, the day before the US elections. It has a real but exceedingly slim (0.41%) possibility of entering our planet’s atmosphere, at which point it would harmlessly disintegrate. But Oreo isn’t taking any chances. The company has built a concrete doomsday vault in Norway to house its cookies.

The vault design is inspired by the famous seed vault in the Arctic that’s meant to preserve the world’s botanical legacy against natural or human-caused disasters. Oreo’s version is much smaller, but it shows the cookie company’s commitment to riding out a truly epic PR stunt.

A video (filled with actor portrayals and one real astronomer) shows off the vault, which is located on permafrost at the coordinates 78°08’58.1″N, 16°01’59.7″E, not far from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

  • Photographer Exposes The ‘Truth’ Behind Professional Portraits, And It’s Pretty Awkward

Photographer Exposes The ‘Truth’ Behind Professional Portraits, And It’s Pretty Awkward

We’ve already told you that you shouldn’t trust the pictures posted on social media (check out that post here) and we’re back to remind you that nothing has changed. The photographers are still manipulating angles to make puddles look like lakes, and still use photoshop to make it seem like you’re swinging on a swing made of flowers.

This glamorous illusion was once again shattered by Gilmar Silva, a Brazilian wedding and family photographer, who created the project LUGARxPHOTO (‘place and photo’), in which he compares the behind the scenes pictures with the end result by putting them side by side. And, as it turns out, it proved to be quite an amusing juxtaposition.

Check out the pictures below to find out how the photography magic happens.

  • Heidi Klum Proves Why She’s The Queen Of Halloween Once Again

Heidi Klum Proves Why She’s The Queen Of Halloween Once Again

“In our house it’s Halloween all year round,” Heidi Klum told once. With an Oscar-winning make-up artist and prosthetics whizzes on speed dial, the mother-of-four means serious business when it comes to her spine-chilling fancy dress costumes.

The internet has already crowned Heidi Klum as the Queen of Halloween. Now, after the supermodel showed up at her 18th annual Halloween bash and revealed her 2017 costume, it’s safe to say she can keep her throne at least until next year.

The German-born 44-year-old outdid even herself as this time her lavish efforts resulted with an epic homage to the one and only Michael Jackson, channeling his iconic 1982 music video for “Thriller.”

  • Photographer Captures The Secret Side Of The Chinese Underground Club Life

Ukrainian artist Sergey Melnitchenko moved to Hong Kong in 2015, where he started off as a model and a dancer. But soon this line of work lead him to a job in one of the city’s nightclubs, which not only turned him into a photographer but also showed him the world he didn’t know exists.

“Transvestites, girls bathing in tubs of beer, drunk actors and even more drunk visitors. All of this [is the] club, the club where I’m working,” that’s the introduction Sergey gives to his photo series ‘Behind The Scenes,’ which he made during a four-month employment in an unnamed Chinese underground club.

“[It] is more like a huge bar with a stage, because no one of the visitors is dancing here,” explains Sergey, who’s photo series is all about “the invisible side of the club, the atmosphere,” and the look into the backstage, where “there is more burlesque than on the stage.” He continues to add: “The concentration of sexual fluids is more powerful than oxygen. There’s no falsehood – it’s not a scene, it’s their everyday life, our life, or rather mine.”

  • Famous “Nirvana Baby” Recreates His Iconic Album Cover 25 Years Later as an Adult

The album cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind might be as iconic as its music. A grunge-era classic, it features a tranquil image of a naked baby boy floating in a swimming pool as he moves towards a dollar bill hooked on a string. The striking image is one you likely remember, or at the very least recognize, as many other music lovers have—this cover, shot by photographer John Chapple, ranked 3rd in Rolling Stone’s Readers Poll of The Best Album Covers of All Time.

Nevermind was released in 1991, so it’s natural to wonder what has happened to the bobbing baby boy since that time. Well, ponder no more—25 years later, this now-grown man named Spencer Elden has recreated the famous photo with the help of Chapple. Although he wears a swimsuit now—and has a tattoo that fittingly says “Nevermind”—Elden strikes the similar pose from so long ago. Even the $200 payment was the same—except now, instead of it going to his parents, Elden got to keep it all for himself.

Here’s the original cover from 1991:

And here’s how he’s grown up, with tattoos and beard stubble:

  • 800 Human Sculptures Found In This Creepy Japanese Village

800 Human Sculptures Found In This Creepy Japanese Village

Japanese photographer Ken Ohki who goes by the name Yukison was traveling in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, when he stumbled upon one of the creepiest arrays of human-like sculptures scattered around the village of Fureai Sekibutsu no Sato (The Village Where You Can Meet Buddhist Statues).

I felt like I’d accidentally stumbled into some forbidden area. Amazing,” writes Ken on his Twitter account.

What he actually stumbled upon was a park with over 800 different stone statues carved in the likeness of Buddhist deities and people close to the park’s founder Mutsuo Furukawa. His idea was to make this park a popular tourist destination, where people would come to relax. Nice idea, sure. But as the time passed the statues lost that relaxation quality about them and now gives an even more creepy vibe.

Just imagine yourself making the same discovery alone. At night. With no help in sight. Yeah… Relaxing.

Surreal Photos Of The Burning Man Festival

Welcome home. That’s how you’re greeted when entering a remote piece of Nevada desert where real meets surreal in the annual Burning Man festival.

For photographer Victor Habchy the festival started in 2014:

I simply packed my bag and traveled the world to attend this magnificent event. I came alone, but let me tell you something: I never felt lonely for a second.

For one week that patch of desert is transformed into the most surreal setting where anything goes:

Never in my life have I experienced more love, more freedom, and more self-expression.”

This place gathers everything that is left of the human dreams and utopia and how, by every individual means, we could work together to build up a better world.

I found beauty in every person and I saw myself beautiful too. I have shared so much, and I have been covered of joy, freedom and love.”

People say you can’t describe what you feel during this festival. However, what they first told me when I arrived is relevant to describe how my week as: ‘Welcome home.
