In an extension of a family home in London’s Stoke Newington area, architectural studio Al-Jawad Pike present a simple, open plan kitchen.
Lead designers of the London-based practice Jessam Al-Jawad and Dean Pike decided to implement concrete, brick and timber as the extension’s primary materials. The architects describe this kitchen space to be inspired by the work of Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens, and the use of muted tones, particularly the grey bricks, is a gentle reference to brutalism. “Combining [the bricks] with the room’s concrete and oak joinery elements seemed an interesting way to offset a rough surface with some refinement,” Al-Jawad and Pike explain. A skylight above the entrance of the extension visually connects the new volume with the original structure of the house, whilst inviting natural light into the space. Daylight also enters the extension through the sliding glass door that almost takes up the entirety of the exterior façade.
