Barato’s Google Art

Art director and environmental artist Barato found that the popular search engine’s algorithms can generate harmonious and well-structured patterns. By using google search, more precisely the search for images, the artist creates digital minimalist street art that can be found all around europe. Inspired by the work of Rothko and Mondrian, these colorful palettes emerge by changing search terms with specific colour relationships like “Snow”, “Fire”, “Real Madrid”, “Mondrian”, “Fog”, “Forest” and “Blue Klein”. The google algorithm creates rectangles with the dominant color of each image, which distributes along the screen according to the size and proportion of the images before showing all the pixels. After posting his art on digital platforms and social networks, Barato decided to turn these works into street art by transforming the usual advertising platforms in minimal art displays all over Amsterdam, the London subways and Porto.
