Kvadrat Showroom – Copenhagen

Reflecting the materiality, volume and tactility of the Kvadrat collections, Bouroullec Studio‘s design for their new Copenhagen flagship showroom marks the latest creative collaboration between the two companies.

Paris-based design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have a long history working with innovative textile designers Kvadrat — having previously produced the ‘Ready Made Curtain‘,’Roller Blinds‘, ‘Clouds‘ for the brand, along with the design of textiles and several of their showrooms in Stockholm. This partnership finds its most recent form in Bouroullec Studio’s design of Kvadrat’s Copenhagen showroom. Erwan Bouroullec explains the thought process behind the design of the showroom. “The concept we developed is focused on materiality, which is at the heart of the Kvadrat brand. For instance, the showroom aims to deliver total flexibility to create scenes with large pieces of textiles and rugs. Doing so provides a deep insight into the weave, weight, transparency, and quality of each design.”

To display the Kvadrat textiles and rugs, Bouroullec Studio have designed a bespoke heavy-duty hanging and shelving system, made from anodized aluminium, that fits into a gridded track ceiling. The nature of the design allows for the freedom of transformation of the showroom, the space can be completely clear or filled with rugs and textiles, offering a multitude of experiences. Large windows inhabit three sides of the showroom, providing panoramic views over an industrial harbor located towards the centre of Copenhagen. The space is bright and airy, an ambience that is enhanced by the choice of white as the dominant colour — limiting distraction from the Kvadrat textiles. Inside, two opposing rows of brick walls run parallel through the centre of the space, topped by transparent glass screens.

The majority of the furniture in the showroom is custom-made with a large proportion designed by Bouroullec Studio for Vitra. These include the Belleville armchairs, Alcove Plume sofas, Tyde tables and Cyl high tables. Tiles designed by Bouroullec Studio for Mutina adorn the bathrooms. The seating inside the showroom is upholstered in Kvadrat’s Basel and Hallingdal 65. Outside showcases designs from Bouroullec for Hay.
