The documentary photography of Stefano Marchionini appears to have been informed by his years in training as a painter in Venice. The Arles-based photographer, originally from Verbania, Italy, captures images that reminisce the forms and moods of classical still-life and vanitas pictures.
These qualities are especially present in his series ‘Regrets’, an ongoing project that compiles photos conveying “the passing of time and a sense of ennui.” The photographs are both ambiguous and highly personal: Marchionini’s decontextualized monuments, objects and landscapes form a loose emotive narrative about his move to the South of France, a choice that wasn’t entirely his. “Taking pictures in these new surroundings have become a way to express part of my subconscious,” Marchionini explains, capturing in ‘Regrets’ a dialogue between natural decay and new life.
