Lonneke Van Der Palen’s Highlighted Path

The style of Dutch photographer Lonneke van der Palen is difficult to define: sometimes absurd an sometimes abstracted, but always perfectly lit and bold in color and composition.

Van der Palen has been developing a distinct aesthetic vocabulary since graduating from Den Haag Royal Academy of Art in 2011, and her most recent series ‘Please Return To The Highlighted Route’ is exemplary of the breadth of her skill. The series brings together a collection of images that seem to have little in common. A faceless woman stands with her hair tucked into her collar, a sign set amongst an arid landscape reads “Snow not removed beyond here”, and pastel clouds float across a blue sky at sunset. These photographs are united by van der Palen’s distinct aesthetic, their compositions almost graphic and their colors vibrant and striking.
