Clouds are something of a leitmotif in the oeuvre of Swedish artist Martin Jonsson. They appear in almost every oil painting, obscuring faces and annihilating identities.
Jonsson credits his lively imagination and early interest in René Magritte and the Swiss surrealist H.R. Ginger with the direction that his work has taken. Painted in oils, Jonsson’s works feature young girls and men set against Dali-esque deserts with their faces shrouded by nebulous matter. Though surreal, these paintings share a serene quality. Colored with a mute palette, their happenings managing to somehow appear entirely normal.
