Pedevilla Architects Completes A Cooking Showroom At Bad Schörgau

In the bucolic region of South Tyrol, Italy, lies hotel and wellness boutique Bad Schörgau. The restaurant is renowned for providing exceptional service and has won several prestigious cooking awards. The hoteliers desired a cooking academy to provide students an insight into the local gourmet cuisine.

Pedevilla Architects designed the brand new cooking academy venue which includes a hall, seminar room, and “Trehs Haus” — a boutique store that sells natural cosmetics. The team designed the building around a monolithic block of Sarner porphyry — a local natural stone — which is to be used as a cooking block. Weighing in at 22,000 kilograms and coming in at just under five meters in length, the gray-green block is a standout feature of the showroom. The sides of the cooking counter have been left exposed while the top has been burnished to enable chefs to prepare meals there.

The cooking area leads to a hall and to a twisting staircase to the seminar room above. The ceiling up here is intricately patterned with circles made from hemp and limed spruce. The circles have been cut to create star-shaped gaps where shards of light shine through.
