Restaurant Old Scuola ・ Rotterdam

Named Old Scuola, this restaurant was founded by the two Dutch entrepreneurs Marco Zander and Daniel van der Stel with the mission to create the ultimate pizza.

Since five years they have been purveying pizza to the crowds with a festival food truck, and now the double-height space is their first fixed location. The restaurant is located in the new creative hub ‘Het Industriegebouw’ in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and also houses MVRDV and Groos Concept Store. Three centrally positioned Terrazzo bar elements form the epicentre of the 350m2 industrial production kitchen and restaurant. Designed by Rotterdam-based Architect studio IWT, these different zones of the bar elements enable social encounters between guests and staff. Old Scuola is equipped with a metal clad support strip, two wood-fired ovens, kitchen, stairs, toilets and storage, all arranged in a minimal programmatic footprint. Custom-made acoustic baffles and adjustable frames with integrated lighting on the ceiling provide a sound and light intimacy atmosphere in this industrial environment. Linoleum covered dining tables mark the more secluded areas under and above the entresol, and are enclosed by curtains to enable more privacy. With street front seating and expansive views from the mezzanine, dining at Old Scuola becomes a totally new experience while eating pizza.
