Vicki King describes the moment she discovered making photography to be “like someone turned a spotlight on.” She reminisces an enchanting first relationship with the art form, explaining, “My dad used to take pictures and put on slide shows for us, they were like these manifestations of things I couldn’t remember beamed up and shimmering on the wall.” Now, the London-based photographer shines a spotlight on her own otherworldly interactions, manipulating reality into something a little more magical. Diptychs of models and creatures mirror similar shapes and textures, mundane objects in a landscape feature as sights of mythical significance and sequin applique gowns dress up the models to be fairies. By presenting these contemporary visions of fairy tales, King closes the space between reality and figments of imagination.
