How the iPhone 8 Camera Performs in the Hands of Photographers

A post shared by Heide Lindgren (@heidelindgren) on

With the release of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, the first thing on a photographer’s minds is—how good is the camera? And while we all know that iPhone takes good pictures—they even have their own awards—does the iPhone 8 live up to the hype?

Let’s start by going over what’s promised with the new camera models. Both have a 12 megapixel back camera and a wide angle lens, with the iPhone 8 Plus having an added telephoto camera. Apple promises improved portrait mode, with greater depth of field and lighting options to get a studio effect from your smartphone.

In fact, the portrait lighting options are quite extensive and use facial detection to map the depth and shadow you are looking for. The ability to select between natural, studio, contour, and stage lighting should give greater flexibility and creativity to photographers. Apple has also improved the flash and the ability to capture images in low light.

It all sounds great on paper, but how is it in reality? Images are starting to pop up online, allowing us to see how the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus perform in real life. Take a look and judge for yourself before running off to the Apple store.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus boast improved cameras with special portrait lighting features. How have they been performing in the hands of photographers?

One of my favorite shots and moments from my shoot with iPhone 8 Plus in Leh (Kashmir region, India.) We got behind schedule but saw how amazing this light was… hurried back to hotel, grabbed bags, jumped a wall, ran up this hill and had about 2 minutes of this light before it was completely gone. I was in this region for 4 days and this is all I got for pretty light – wish we had been there earlier but glad we weren’t 2 minutes later! . I set up a time lapse that went for another hour or so after this and had a great time sitting there, watching it get dark and listening to stories from my guide, Tashi. He’s been guiding in this area 26 years and has seen a lot during that time (including snow leopard just a few hundred yards from where I shot this.) . Check out BTS to getting this shot in my Stories. @kerdowney . #shotoniphone8plus
