Over the past few months, many of our homes have shifted, somewhat reluctantly, into our office space, school, lounge area, and entertainment venue. It’s natural to re-examine not only the functionality of our spaces, but also prioritize how they promote inspiration and motivation. If you find yourself foggy on creative ideas while spiraling down a YouTube rabbit hole, you’re not alone—designer (and YouTuber) John Malecki shares your sentiments.

The woodworker’s creative channel has a series of videos aimed at cutting through the fog with some innovative approaches to furniture. Inspired by a fellow YouTuber named Slovenian Woodworker, Malecki decided to try his hand (and saw) at the unique design of an optical illusion themed table. After plotting out the dimensions, Malecki gathered his materials and settled on the idea of the Impossible Floating Cave Table and got straight to work. In his process video, Malecki skillfully uses a combination of laminated wood boards and crystal-clear acrylic to make the table appear like its top is floating in the air. The result is a dense optical illusion and an astonishing piece of art.
