If you have a pet, you probably have thousands of photos of it on your phone. But what do you do when simple phone photography is no longer enough? Well, you hire a professional photographer, of course. It might sound a little overboard but that’s exactly what one redditor recently did.

The woman paid 175 Canadian dollars (123 USD) for a professional photoshoot of her cat Kazmir and shared the pictures to the r/aww subreddit where they quickly went viral, receiving over 130k upvotes. The pictures were taken by Canadian photographer Sarah Bourque of Wally & Roops Pet Photography. In a recent interview with Bored Panda the photographer said she was pleasantly surprised to see Kazmir’s photos posted on Reddit.

Sarah says she took the photos back in January. “We’d had some stormy weather but the sun peaked out just in the nick of time for us,” said the photographer. “I met Kazmir and his mom and dad at a local park where I knew there would be some lovely quiet spots for us to use.”

According to the photographer, Kazmir was used to being outside and was wearing his harness and leash which Sarah later removed in Photoshop.

The photographer said that Kazmir was a wonderful model and she followed him around like his “personal paparazzi”. “We would guide him in the direction we wanted him and then I’d go up ahead and crouch down so I could get the photos as he approached,” added Sarah.

“The park we went to has a lovely area with moss-covered rocky perches to sit and across the street is the beach. We decided to do both locations for extra variety,” said Sarah. “I like to keep things simple and stay as close to eye level with my subject as possible. I want them to be at ease and happy.”

So Sarah spent a lot of time crawling around or laying in the grass as she snapped photos of the cat. “I find cats are natural posers, we let him find spots to perch in the area where the light was prettiest and then I would take photos from a variety of angles and get in nice and close. This usually lasts a few seconds before they tire of my shenanigans and move on. Luckily I’m quick so a few seconds is all I need!”

The photographer explained that it can be tricky to get a cat’s  attention so they used toys and treats to get him to look at the camera. “Never underestimate the power of shaking a container of treats!” joked Sarah.

Sarah has been into photography for 11 years and became a full-time pet photographer two years ago. As for the name Wally & Roops Pet Photography, Sarah explained that she named her business after her two dogs as they are her muses.

“From zoomy puppies to stoic seniors, from aloof cats to llamas or chickens, they are all incredible and I love being able to capture their unique personalities,” explained Sarah how she got into pet photography. “I also love the interactions with the families, we are all animal lovers so we tend to spend the photoshoot sharing stories and having a laugh.”
