Artisan Peter Brown is a self-proclaimed “geek with a full set of power tools” who takes advantage of his knowledge and skills to create gorgeous DIY projects. With an incredible attention to detail and skillful hand, he’s recently produced a wooden bowl that glistens with blue resin dancing around its edge. Inspired by secret wood rings, he wanted to produce something similar on a larger scale.
The result of Brown’s DIY is stunning—and he makes it look so easy. In a YouTube video, he starts by cutting walnut wood into one-inch wide and one inch-thick strips. “If you stop at this point,” he writes on Imgur, “you can make a very attractive walnut cutting board. OR, we can break out the sledgehammer and have a little FUN!” Opting for the latter, Brown starts whacking his way through the walnut to create sharp, jagged edges. Afterwards, he pours polyester resin (colored with blue epoxy pigment) over the broken wood and lets it fully cure.
After waiting several days for the wood and resin to be completely dry, he gets back to work. It’s now time to cut and shape the bowl. Because of the resin, Brown’s task is much more challenging. “Hollowing [out the bowl] is a SLOW process and took me close to an hour to complete,” Brown admits. Offering perspective, he adds, “On an all wood bowl, this would take about 15-20 minutes.” Once this entire tedious process was completed, he proceeded to sand and polish the resin, bringing the bowl to its final form. The challenges were definitely worth it.

Peter Brown began his resin wood bowl DIY by cutting wood into one-inch strips.
…then he promptly smashed them with a sledgehammer.
After assembling the jagged strips, he poured epoxy resin onto them.
It took several days to fully cure. Afterwards, Brown hollowed and sanded the wood and resin into a bowl.
A little polish made the new bowl shine…
…and now it’s a unique home decor item.
