Larry Bell’s Recent Investigations Into Venice Fog

Renowned for his explorative use of glass and light, the latest exhibition draws inspiration from the marine fog that swamps Venice, where the artist has lived since the early 1960s. These large-scale, cubic forms take on a new luminosity: their muted colors an interpretation of the bright, city lights as they appear when cast through fog. At once ethereal and clinical, the light from the sculptures is both fused and refracted: an evolution of the artist’s earlier work. This sculptural interpretation of light has been fundamental to his practice since art school, having once written: “The one break in the glass created three lines — One a reflection from the break, one then shadow of the break, and then break itself. Reflection, transmission and edge, these elements still are dynamic forces in my work.” Hauser & Wirth Zürich is presenting this major solo exhibition until the 3rd of March 2018.
