Table Manners Explored By Designer Nadine Goepfert

Working predominantly with textiles, Berlin-based designer Nadine Goepfert explores the conventional functions and uses of materials to channel long-standing values into contemporary design. Her study of ‘Manners’ presents a consideration of the social and historical context of table linen and napery, with emphasis on the transition from exclusive to common domestic use. Goepfert conceptualises this transition by using materials such as PVC and rubber alongside linen and cotton, and implementing traditionally decorative features of embroidery and macramé with new functional uses. By subverting these conventions, Goepfert challenges and celebrates everyday table manners and etiquette.
